HCC SPRING 2016 FASHION SHOW: Shear Dimensions - Part I

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

It's Spring and do you know what that means? It means another talented class of fashion industry students are graduating from Houston Community College Central! I was invited to cover the annual Spring Fashion Show, in which each Senior Fashion Design students showcases a 5-piece collection. This year's Spring Fashion Show was titled Shear Dimensions: The Cutting Edge of Fashion and was held at HCC in the school's Learning Hub building. The fashion show was opened to the public with pre-sale tickets set at $15.00 and $20.00 tickets at the door.   The fashion show and the promotion of the show is coordinated by the juniors through Professor Andrea Bonner's Fashion Promotions class. In the promotions class, students learn how to produce a runway show, how to reach out to media contacts, book models and so much more. I think it's very important for any fashion designer to understand the logistics behind a fashion show. Afterall, fashion shows are great ways to get your designs in front of the right people, whether those people are buyers or potential clients.

This year, 20 Fashion Design students sent looks down the runway.  The students spend the entire year  working on their collections. They first come up with a concept, work on their designs, and narrow down their vision to 5 final looks to present during the Fashion Show.  I love seeing emerging designers and the different aesthetics they plan to bring to the industry! Today I'm featuring the first 10 collections. I can't wait to see where all of these design students will end up! This was one of the best runway shows I've ever seen as far as talent goes. Heather, my friend and blogger gal pal who blogs at LA Fashion Snob, and I were SUPER impressed with all of the collections.  After awhile you get tired of seeing the same old, same old when you view a runway. I did not have that experience at this show. Each collection was unique and exciting! Don't believe me? Check them out for yourself:

Designer: Kristen Hanks / Collection: Swinging London
Designer: Haylee Cater / Collection: Cashmere

Designer: Constance Franklin/ Collection: Le Smoking

Designer: Linda Padilla / Collection: Marina Collection

Designer: Cecilia Rojas / Collection: Angels

Designer: David Julian Valdez / Collection: Havana Medley

Designer: Lara Emiola Faussat / Collection: Exotics

Designer: Lauren Battistini / Collection: Sculpted 70s
Designer: Kemi Alao / Collection: Drive

Designer: Annie Chyr / Dissociate

And while all of these collections were great! I do have a top 3:
Annie Chyr's Dissociate collection. I loved the edginess of the girls with a slight Gothic/punk look. I also loved all the capelets.

Kemi Alao's Drive collection: Loved the material choices, and I thought everything fit really well. Plus her styling was fun with the makeup.

Haylee Carter's Cashmere collection: Haylee's cohesion was superb, and I loved the silhouettes, and the print!
