THE EVENT: Introduction to Bona Clara Skincare Line

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

About a week ago, Heather of LA Fashion Snob and I attended a Skincare event at South Shore Harbor Resort in League City.  The event was for Bona Clara Skincare, an age specific skincare line created by MIT grad Jasmina, with the tagline Experience Smarter Beauty.  It's not every day that you have the chance to sit down with the CEO of a company and chat with them, and Jasmina was there in person to tell the story of her line and the decision to go into the direct sales business.  Jasmina is a girl after my own heart!! She has a degree in Chemical & Biological Engineering from MIT and now works in the beauty industry. I have a Chemical Engineering degree and I was impressed that she used her knowledge of biology and chemistry to launch a successful line of skincare.  Teehee, I wish I had done something like that!! Hahaha.  Anyway, here are a few highlights from her chat with us. I will have the full audio on YouTube soon for your listening/viewing pleasure.

"Look how differently this skin responded based on what age group it fell into, what does this mean for us and the products we use on a daily basis. Should I be using the same products as my Mom" Jasmina's venture into the beauty world happened by chance while she was doing research for a professor at a world-reknown bio-medical lab. She was working to develop an antibiotic ear drop for kids to treat ear infections. During her tests on donated slabs of human skin from hospitals (she joked that this was less than glamourous) she came up with no formulation or correlation of data.  Instead of giving up she thought "there has to be certain things that are common amongst all this data." She first separated male skin vs female skin and still no results, next she segmented the skin by age, and all of a sudden the results made sense.

"The industry approaches beauty in 2 ways....Miracle ingredient of the year, and the other approach is problem-specific." During school she became passionate about the beauty industry.  After graduating she worked for 3 brands that increased her experience in the natural product formulation business and she had the opportunity to start her own brand. Jasmina wanted to create a brand that was more educational. She wanted a brand that would do more than just shout out "claims" to women, but teach them.  She launched her line with just 4 treatment creams that were available online only.  In the first year the company grew to over 200,000 customers.  While working for other beauty brands under LVMH she knew some of their companies hadn't see that type of growth early on and she knew she had something special.

"I'm very big into branding...creating a fun brand that is consistent and beautiful and based in luxury but something that's friendly is really important to me." She wanted her brand to illicit an emotional response and took the time after their first launch to chat with her top customers about what they liked and didn't like.  Not only did she discover that her customers were referring her products to their friends and family, they were talking about the education of the brand in addition to the results of the brand, which brought back more people to the site to order more products.

Heather and I had a good time chatting with the other ladies in the room, who turned out to mostly be Bona Clara brand reps, that wanted to know more about the line they were selling and to meet the CEO. I love how approachable Jasmina is. You can really tell she cares about her company, and the people working for her and with her.  As for Heather and I? We left with a sample bag of products from the Twenties collection. I haven't had the time to test them out yet, but when I do, there will be a Product Review post for sure!.

After Jasmina's presentation the regional rep Erika and Houston Rep Abigail handed out some awards for the gals. I had to leave before this part was finished as my Hunger Monster was kicking in! But yes you can be a consultant for Bona Clara!! If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity go HERE.
