THE EVENT: WABC Style Trends Seminar

Thursday, April 05, 2012

As you all know by now, I spend a lot of my time running from one event to the next, and last Saturday was no exception. Prior to our Houston Fashion Blogger Meetup at 2pm, I had RSVP'd to cover the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Women's Guild "Style Trends Seminar". This event started bright and early at 10am with vendor booths open at 9am.  Not only was I excited for this event because of Fashion, but I'm also a member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, and will shortly be joining the Women's Guild Auxilary Group.

This 2 hours event was jammed-packed with great style information and Fashion. Joy Sewing, Fashion & Beauty Editor of the Houston Chronicle and member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church was the style seminar moderator.  She provided the audience with great style tips, and brought in items from her own closet as examples of Spring Trending.

Of course I had to capture anything cute that the ladies in the audience were wearing! I'm so obsessed with all things spiked right now, and this bracelet is FAB!

In between the Fashion Trends and the Shoe Fashion Show, we were privy to fabulous makeup tips from the lady on the left (Tanya Robertson) and her model.  I just love the fresh vibrant makeup that the model has on, loving the lip colors!

All of the Fashion Trend Models

Joy and her intern giving the following tips
Colorblocking: Unique color mixes, like green and gray; yellow and blue, orange and fuchsia, blue and green, purple and orange.
Tip: Stick with 1-2 bold hues. Too many can look cartoonish

Mixed Prints: Stripes with polka dots; graphic prints with florals.
Tip: Stick within the same color family

Animal Prints: Zebra, Leopard, Giraffe.
Tip: Choose one main piece in an animal print. No head-to-toe looks. Or mix an animal print with a bold color, like red or yellow
Shoes from Joy's closet. She said she mostly shops at TJ Maxx and Marshalls (So do I!)
How to keep clothes in place: instead of wardrobe tape, which can come off with perspiration, try toupe or wig tape from a beauty supply store.  Use scissors to cut the amount needed. Works well for deep cleavage, front and back, or annoying bra straps

How to wear white: Stick with neutral or black under garments, not white, which shows through

How to pick the right bra: Get bra fitting every 5-10 years or with weight gain or loss of 10 pounds. Your bra sizes change as your weight fluctuates
How fun are these clutches!?
Fashion Rules
You can wear white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day.
Your shoes and bag don't need to match.
Proper foundation garments are essential regardless of your size.

I happened to pick a seat with a card taped under it, which meant I won a door prize! And how fabulous is this ladies outfit. She's definitely channeling the first Lady here!

Outside the seminar was the Vendor Mall, so of course there was lots of shopping going on!

Shantell Thomas of LASHES Company was giving lash treatments at a discounted price of $25 to the ladies. A treatment that is normally $100! I thought about getting it done but I wear glasses so no one really sees my lashes anyway! lol

Vibrant colors at the Social Butterfly Collection booth. They had an entire rack of discounted clothes. Everything on that rack was $25.00!

I love the oranges trending for Spring

The last vendor was actually outside in a portable shoe mobile. The owner of Stiletto Steppin brought her pest shoes for the ladies of WABC to choose from.  Not only was it a cute marketing idea, but the van was air conditioned, which is a necessary added plus for shopping in Houston

These were my favorite 3 shoes offered by Stiletto Steppin

How awesome is this shoe!? 3 prints in one!

Anything that sparkles grabs my attention

I can't wait to become an official member of the Women's Guild and help plan future events like this.  WABC is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary this year, so almost everything with the church is around that theme. It's an exciting time for Wheeler.

  2. That is so neat! I like the 3 shoes you picked as your faves too. Especially the first and second ones. I think we have similar shoe sense =) What does the Auxiliary Group at your church do? I miss church. I'm moving again and I really need to find one I feel comfortable with.

    1. Well so far, all I know about them is that they plan fashion events, but I know they do more, like community service and stuff. I was going to Wheeler for about a year or so before I actually joined. So definitely take your time in finding a church that's the right fit for you!! :-)

  3. Looks like a fun event. And lashes for $25 - girl!! I would have grabbed your hand and yanked you over there. =)

    1. I know! I should have done it, but I didn't feel like waiting. The wait was long, as you can imagine for $25! lol

  4. Hello, Shasie.

Your pictures are awesome! I will send a link to your blog to our members. Thank you so much for attending our Style Seminar, and I hope you join the Women's Guild soon. We typically meet the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Our summer break is from June - August.

Our purpose and mission is to foster fellowship, provide community service, and raise funds for the church's educational program.
