Lauren Luna of Lauren Luna Ltd and I at her shoeGASM event
On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending shoeGasm, an event put on by my bloggy/public relations friend Brandie Randolph of chicFABu to introduce Lauren Luna to the Houston Art & Fashion scene.  Lauren is by no means, new to the artistic world, but she recently moved to Houston 6 months ago to expand her business.  An artist first, Lauren has been designing custom shoes for 4 years now, incorporating her Fine Arts background into a lucrative shoe business.  Lauren's shoes have been worn by celebrities like Angela Simmons and Pharrell. I was able to interview Lauren while she was waiting for her on the spot painting to dry.

My Interview with Lauren Luna
Lauren, it's a pleasure to meet you! I see that you have a lot of talents! So which came first? The artist or the shoe designer? I'm a painter first. I received my Bachelors in Fine Arts from Kent State University in Ohio with a focus in painting. I'll also graduate this May from the Academy of Arts in San Francisco with a Master's Degree.

So how long have you been putting art on footwear? I've been doing this for 4 years now.  I was first asked to do paintings on canvas sneakers, then leather sneakers and now embellished heels.

How can your fans own a pair of Lauren Luna Shoes? Custom shoe orders start at $150.00 and you can provide the pair of shoes that you want designed. I will be expanding to factory production of  4 of my shoe designs soon!

Up until now Lauren has been doing custom orders, but these 4 pairs of shoes are going to factory production for multiple sizes
Since your shoes are custom-orders, have you created any collections? Yes, I had a 7 deadly sins collection that I put together 2 years ago.

So what brings you to Houston? Weather is definitely one of the reasons! I was very impressed with Houston's museum district, it's not just one museum it's a whole area with many museums.  Houston is also more Art-Friendly than where I was living in Ohio

Where can we find you in the upcoming weeks if we want to purchase your artwork or have a shoe designed? I will be at Artopia next week, the H-town sneaker summit on Sunday, & Midtown's Art in the Park in April.

What are your future goals for your line? Right now I'm working on having boutiques pick up my line to see them in their stores. Eventually, I would like to be on the level of Steve Madden & Nine West, and have my shoe line fully noted.  I'm a member of the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY).  They host quarterly shows for smaller shoe brands to introduce themselves to boutique. I plan on attending their trade show in June.

I asked Lauren to tell me her current favorite shoe from her designs and she picked this one! I love this one too! The hardware is super edgy and fun!
Any plans to go beyond shoes and artwork? While studying the Fine Arts we learn about all avenues of the arts, including jewelry making.  Right now I'm taking it one step at a time, but that's not to say I would never venture into another avenue of the Arts.

Thank you Lauren for your time, it was a real treat interviewing you!

The event venue for Lauren Luna's shoeGasm was held at Bella Epique.  This venue opened in 2010, and I'm so upset that I'm just now finding out about it!! It's such a quaint spot! It's by day a salon and makeup bar, but they rent out the venue for private events.  Below are some of the nice ladies who work there!

Renee Jefferson (Bella Epique Salon Manager)
Valerie Greene Anderson,La Tasha & La Trisha LaNae' McIntosh (Beautifully Said)
Guests were also entertained with lovely Jazz Music by Paige Parker Band
Brandie Randolph of chicFABu and I
Throughout the evening guests could purchase raffle tickets to win this "painted at the event" artwork by Lauren Luna.  Valerie Greene Anderson, a fellow Houston Blogger won the raffle! I have to say I'm so JEALOUS that she won! How amazing is this piece.  That shoe painting belongs in any Fashionista's home!
