Be Uplifted With Siggie Lodoen - The Sports Bra for Busty Women

Thursday, December 14, 2017

As a big-breasted female, there are certain things that I can't do:

1. Leave the house without a bra on
2. Buy a cheap bathing suit
3. Buy a cheap bra
4. Go to the gym wearing only one bra (Yes I have to go to the gym with more than one to stay locked and loaded).

However, number 4 may be changing due to a invention by Jennifer Paulson, founder of Siggie Lodoen.  Jennifer and her team have spent years trying to find the perfect sports bra for curvy, big-chested women. Now that they have sealed their design, they are ready to bring it to the world, and are asking for your help on Kickstarter. I had the lovely opportunity to interview Jennifer and find out more about her and her brand:

Hi Jennifer, please tell my readers a little about yourself:
Hi Shasie! Thank you so much for doing a story on our amazing new sports bra. I live in Houston, Texas—the city with the greatest people in the world! I have lived here for 4 years and have met so many wonderful, strong, kind women in Houston. I am originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin so I am a big football fan. I'm unmarried because I have been married to my career for the past 10 years. Recently, I felt God calling me to leave my good job to strike out on my own and focus on helping women. My goal with this sports bra is to improve women’s lives by making exercise more fun and comfortable!

How did you recognize this was a need in the fitness world?

I have had a large chest since I was a teenager and I could never find a sports bra that eliminated bounce. I always had to wear 2-3 bras at any given time in order for my breasts not to bounce. People made fun of me for this and I felt like it wasn’t fair that I was limited in my activity by my biology. I tried every bra on the market for years and none of them worked. It was then that I knew there was a gap in the market and I hoped that I could be the person to fill that void and help other women.

Do you have a background in fashion and design?

No I don’t! My degrees are in religion, economics, and ethics. My career background is in business. I ran the North American Retail Operations of a large cosmetics company for years.

How long have you been trying to come up with the perfect no-bounce bra?
My team and I have been working on this for about 3 years!

How did you come up with the name Siggie Lodoen?
At first I picked a Greek word for the Bible, Arete, which means the highest human achievement. However, that name for a company had already been copywrited and we couldn’t use it. We started thinking about influential women in our lives and we decided upon our great-grandmother. She raised my dad and she was strong, independent, and ambitious—a perfect fit for our company name!!

Who else is helping you realize your dream? Do you currently have a team?
Yes we are blessed to have a 4 person team: my sister Beth who does PR and marketing, our manufacturing consultant Brooke who sourced the factory and the materials, my engineer Dick who is a spacesuit designer for NASA and myself. God put all of these people in my path plus many more, without whom I could not have come this far. I am very lucky!

I love your company's values of support, joy, commitment to a larger purpose, integrity & ethics, and stewardship. Can you elaborate on these core values? When my sister and I started dreaming up this company, we both had good and bad workplace experiences to draw from. We knew exactly what we wanted and exactly what we didn't. Throughout our careers we have worked for women who had a lot of impact on us.  Being the kind of bosses that we were lucky enough to have had was a big priority. Hence, support. As for joy, I can be prone to taking things too seriously, so I wanted joy to be front and center as a value--if only to remind myself! Commitment to a larger purpose: Beth and I have been really fortunate throughout our lives. We've had some bad things happen to us, of course, but we have been overwhelmingly blessed. We want to make life easier for others in whatever small ways we can, and this seems like a good place to start! As for integrity and ethics and stewardship, those all stem from our Midwestern Lutheran values! We want to make ethical choices and always be guided by what's right. Or try to, at least!

Why did you choose kickstarter to raise funds for your idea?
I didn’t realize how expensive starting a company would be. I had saved up some money during my career, but once I started Siggie Lodoen the money started dwindling very, very fast! In order to produce this amazing bra I needed help and I didn’t want to get a loan. I hope that once people see this product on Kickstarter they will want it, and once they want it will pledge and help the campaign. Succeeding in our campaign would give me the production funds I need, and confirmation that people believe in my idea—two birds with one stone!

What are some of the items pledges can receive when they support your cause?
We have a beautiful tote bag that has our logo on one side and the phrase “Be Uplifted” on the other. We also have 4 T-shirt options, and then we have the piece de resistance: the Siggie Lodoen sports bra! For those folks who want to support even further we have packages that include a mix of these three items as well as a grand reward where the purchaser can be in our next campaign video—travel and lodging included!

What is the biggest bra size that your brand currently goes up to?
We go up to 42M, one of the only brands I know that goes up to that size in a sports bra.

Once your brand is up and running, where can potential customers purchase your bra?
It will always be available on our website, siggielodoen.com, and we will also be selling it to major department stores like Nordstrom and Macy’s as well as to sporting-good stores like Academy and Dick’s.

Who is your ideal consumer? Tell us about the girl wearing your bra?

The Siggie Lodoen woman is smart,  fun, hardworking, confident and able to handle anything life throws at her. She has a sense of humor and business sense; she’s the opposite of a mean girl. If you’re sitting alone at a party, the Siggie Lodoen woman will come talk to you about the appetizer spread or compliment your shoes. She’s a pleasure to be around, is the star at parties and  on choir trips, but no matter how much she seems to enjoy yours, she likes her own company the best.

Are there any plans to make other items such as shirts, pants, etc.?
At this time we really want to get sports bras perfect. We’d like to expand our line of sports bras but will not pursue any other type of clothing until we are sure that women have what they need in the way of sports bras.

Is there anything else you would like for my readers to know about you or Siggie Lodoen?
I would like your readers to know that we care about them here at Siggie Lodoen and want to give them an effective product to work-out in. We value women for their internal qualities and not for superficial qualities. Our focus on fitness is about helping women feel good about themselves and gaining confidence in how wonderful they are as people. Siggie Lodoen will never be about judgments—it will always be about support!

I know that I can't wait for a bra like this to come onto the market. I'm tired of wearing 2 or 3 bras to the gym to fit my Triple Ds....And it's uncomfortable.  Busty girls want to work out too! Right now Siggie Lodoen is at 59% of their Kickstarter goal, and they only have until December 25th to achieve it.  I would love for you guys to support them, so that there can be a bra like this on the market! Also, if you donate to them and mention that you came from my site, you'll get a free tote!!
