GIVE BACK: HEART OF HAITI HANDCRAFTED DECOR ITEMS

Thursday, December 03, 2015

Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness, reflection, and for some; a time to give back. I had a great time last week, back home with my friends and family in Pittsburgh and was sad that it was over so quickly.  This year we had a new addition to our table setting for Thanksgiving; this magnificent bowl from Macy's Heart of Haiti collection. After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Macy's wanted to help the country get back on it's feet, but in a way where the families could use their amazing craftmanship skills to make a difference.  The items created by the Haitian artisans are sold through Macy's and the money goes back to the artisans and their families. The Heart of Haiti campaign is only 4 years old, but it joins the ranks of Macy's 10 year initiative in Rwanda, called Path to Peace.  Similar in execution, the Rwanda Path to Peace campaign features hand woven baskets by artisans in Rwanda that are also sold at Macy's.  It's due to programs like this, and Macy's stellar diversity events, every year, that brings Macy's to the top of my list of favorite stores.  No other store does what Macy's does to bring awareness.

When you receive your Heart of Haiti item or Rwanda Path to Peace item it comes with a card attached with a note from the artisan who created it. My bowl was created by P. Satyr Jacmel!
I just love the architecture of this bowl. It actually reminds me of the Roman Colosseum!!

The bowl is made out of recycled metal. I wonder if the metal already came with the hammered dots already in it, or if that was something additional that Jamel added to the piece. That had to take a lot of time!

The bowl is great on it's own, and I love the fact that it's open with the arches!
However, I wanted to give it more of a Thanksgiving feel by adding these fall themed napkins to it. They were the perfect lining for the bowl!

Nothing speaks rolls to me, more than Pillsbury flaky biscuits!
The basket, filled with 'fresh from the oven' rolls, fit in well with our other Thanksgiving dishes!
