EVENT RECAP: Le Diner En Blanc HoustonFriday, June 19, 2015
This past Sunday, I attended the Inauguaral Diner En Blanc - Houston event. The premise of Diner En Blanc is basically a flash mob dinner in which the participants don't know where the dinner will be held until the last minute. The only thing they know is that they have to wear white, and bring a table and chairs with picnic basket and everything has to be in white. I received an email from the PR firm representing the event inviting me to attend as media. How could I not participate in this unique event? I of course said yes, and invited my friend Leena to atend with me! The event was great, but getting ready for it was a substantial amount of work. First of all I tore my closet apart looking for an all white outfit, and while I own a bunch of white items, nothing felt right. I ended up purchasing a new outfit (post to come later), and then there was the aspect of having everything be in all white, and bringing stemware, flatware, plates, etc that were mostly all white. I headed to the dollar store and Target to pick up some all white items, while Leena picked up our baskets! She even had them painted white. The only other bit of information we received was our departure point.
Our departure point was at Four Seasons hotel, and we needed to be there by 5:30. Participants were given different departure points around the city and we still didn't know where the final location would be. We arrive slightly after 5:30 at the Four Seasons. Our group hosts, told us the location and that we would be walking to the location at 6, so we had about thirty minutes to spare. Turns out we had about 45 to 50 minutes to spare and some of the crew at Four Seasons headed up to the bar to grab a cocktail before heading to dinner. Around 6 the big group of us, all in white descended on the streets of Houston to walk to Discovery Green. Discovery Green is a cool park in the heart of the city of Houston, and it was a great location for the dinner. At the park, everyone set up their tables and chairs with white tableclothes and all of the table decorations and food that they packed from home. As media for the event we had table and chairs already provided for us, so that was nice not having that last minute item to pack. Leena and I set up our table with our food! It was so cute! We also brought a bottle of wine. Around 7pm the official start of eating commenced with the waving of our white napkins.
The hosts, Tracey and Gaia treated the media to a media lounge in addition to our table. The media lounge had an open bar for wine, and some yummy snacks, a step & repeat, and a nice seating area! Before we started eating dinner, I took photos around the event of the other diners and our place setting. I was really impressed by the amount of decorations and food that the other guests brought to the event!! Some people went all out! During dinner there was a live band, and after dinner the DJ took over to get people on the dance floor. There was also a photo booth opportunity. It was a lot of fun. I only wish that it had been a Saturday night instead of a Sunday night because we didn't stay the whole time due to being tired and having to get up for work the next day! All in all I think the event went well. Anytime you do an event like this for the first time there are bound to be a few kinks, but everything got sorted out and I think it was definitely an event I would like to see come back to Houston next year!
