EVENTS: FLOR Design Competition Recap

Sunday, May 24, 2015

A few weeks ago, I posted about the FLOR Design Competition that was being judged by award-winning, eco-friendly designer, Robin Wilson.  Robin hosted a night out at Houston's FLOR location in River Oaks.  The competition was open to the public and all guests could enter the competition. My competitive nature wouldn't let me back down from a challenge, so I showed up with my game face on! I was a little late to the event because it started at 5, and I just barely get off of work at 5:30 so I showed up around 7. Luckily, the event was still going on and I could enter! There were carpet squares galore to choose from. The hardest part was choosing which square to be the first one. While scanning the options, I had a million ideas for a starting point, but I decided to stick with old faithful...black! Ha! I know right? How boring. I have my choice of all the colors and patterns in the world, and I went for black, but black was just the foundation (I guess I could have chose another neutral like white...but oh well).

Anyhoo! Starting with the black squares, I decided that I wanted a color theme of squares that had a focal point of another color, but black was still prevalent.. The only color that had the most options for this theme was blue! I gathered up all the blue squares that fit my theme and began laying them out in to the standard rectangular shape of a rug.   Feeling unimpressed, I was ready to start over, but the store manager reminded me that our rugs did not have to be in the conventional rug shape. They could be any shape or style that we wanted! Yippee! I scrapped the rectangle and went for the staircase pattern. I also turned the striped squares opposite of each other for each row.  Here's my final rug entry:

The store owner took a picture of all of the entries and then we had to put the squares back in the option area for other people to choose from. Unfortunately, I did not win, but I had a great time designing my future rug and meeting Robin. She was super nice and I found out that she's originally from Austin! However, the competition doesn't stop in Houston. Robin will be visiting 11 other FLOR stores around the country between now and July 6th and the winning rug from each store will be featured on FLOR's website for public voting,  July 6th through 15th. The winning rug of that final vote will be reproduced and included in the FLOR lineup for sale. Proceeds from the sale of the winner's rug will go to a charity of their choice! Though I did not win the competition for the Houston store, I wish all of the remaining contestants good luck!

We received a goodie bag from the event that included FLOR Carpet Coasters, coupon, FLOR Catalog and a signed copy of Robin Wilson's latest book; Clean Design: Wellness For Your Lifestyle.
