MBFASHIONWEEK: Backstage with SupimaFriday, September 06, 2013
By 11:30 am today, on my first day EVER at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I was being prepped for my first backstage interview for FashionMingle.net. I'm attending MBFW as the Style Editor for Fashion Mingle and we are signed up for T least 20 interviews this week. I was assigned the interviews for the designers showcasing in the Supima Design Competition.
Supima is a brand of luxury cotton, that has hosted this contest for the last 6 years. Each year they have top desgign schools pick 2 of their seniors to compete in the competition. The students make evening gown collections using Supima cotton and present them to the judges on the runway at MBFW. Their show was at 1pm at studio, and my interview was scheduled for 12:30 and I was using equipment I hadn't used before, so Melissa (founder and creative director of FashionMingle.net) was prepping me for the task. Around noon I headed to the backstage area of box and studio for the interview.
Going backstage was AMAZING!!! It looked so chaotic, but almost like "controlled" chaos. Somehow, someway out of the plethora of people behind stage doing hair, makeup, dressing, media, things got done and a smooth runway show was put on without a hitch. This always amazes me! I've heard about the craziness backstage, but seeing it first hand today was a real treat. I learned some media jargon too...B-Roll. Since I was 30 minutes early the reps for HL Group (the pr firm producing the Supima show) asked me if I wanted to get some B-Roll shots. I was embarrassed to have to ask what she meant, but she was cool, and said beauty shots. Basically pictures of the models getting ready, and talking to the makeup and hair stylist, etc...I was like "Sure!" I spent a good 40 minutes in the makeup and hair area before they were ready for me to interview the designers, so I was able to chat with the lead makeup artist and watch 5 people work on one of the models. Her hair was crazy curly and they needed to get it straight to braid it. While she was having her hair done, someone was doing her makeup and someone was doing her nails. Crazy! Around 12:40 I was able to go chat with 2 of the designers: Michelle & Morgan. You'll be able to view the interview on FashionMingle.net soon, so stay tuned! In the meantime, check out these photos from backstage!
