STYLE TIPS: For the Girly Tomboy going to High School

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Recently a reader of mine sent me an email asking for help in figuring out her style for going back to school.  This was the message to me:

I love your website and style and I had a few questions to ask. I'm about to go into high school and I want to improve my style. I've been trying to get a tomboy look for two years now and it hasn't been working as I planned. Now I'm still leaning towards the tomboy look but I'm also leaning towards the girly look too. It's so hard to choose what I should wear or buy because I'm short and dark skin and I don't know what looks good or not. I was wondering if you have any tips for the style I'm trying to look for. I want my style to be tomboyish but with a girlish touch to it, I don't mind wearing skirts or dresses but some days I would like to wear jeans and a t-shirt with heels or something. My head is just going crazy and I don't know what to do. I would love it if you gave me some tips and what I should do to improve my style to feel more comfortable going out of the house without feeling regret on what I wore.

Dressing for high school is always tricky, because most schools have a strict dress code. It's been ____ years since I've been in high school, but I remember the rules my school had! Here are my tips for my young reader:

1. Add print.  You mentioned that you want to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Try wearing jeans with a print, or a top with a print, as I show below:

2. For the novice dress wearer start off with maxi and midi skirts. These are great lengths for high school and won't get you in trouble for being too short. Make sure that they aren't sheer though, and if they are sheer you may want to invest in a slip to wear underneath. The great thing about maxi skirts is that you can add the tomboy element by pairing them with boots and simple tops.

3. Jeweltones & Sheers. As a fellow dark skin girl, I think the best colors for our skin our rich tones. However we can really pull off any color, because our skintone has a great base for colors of all shades.  Jeweltones, and rich hues really pop against our skin.  Check out these reds and blues. Sheers are really on trend, however since you are in high-school you shouldn't be showing your undergarments, so please add a tank top to your sheer top finds.  You can go with a tank top in the same shade as your sheer, or a different shade like I show on the right.  To keep these embellished sheers grounded pair them with tomboy bottoms (camo pants, boyfriend jeans, etc.)

4. Accessorize! The number one way to take tomboy to girlie is to add accessories. Be sure to add accessories to your t-shirts and jeans!!
