THE EVENT: Macy's Celebrates BHM with Gordon Parks

Monday, February 25, 2013

Macy's, in collaboration with The Gordon Parks Foundation and the American Black Film Festival are celebrating Gordon Park's 100th Birthday for Black History Month.  The event opened up with a short documentary film on Gordon.  The clip was short but very informative. I'll definitely be looking for a longer version of the docufilm.  One of the interesting things I found out from the film was that Gordon Parks was pronounced dead at birth.  One of the doctor's decided to put him in ice water and the water woke him up.  He was meant to stay on this earth and be influential.  After the documentary a panel discussion ensued with David Parks (Gordon's son), Joy Sewing (Houston Chronicle Fashion & Beauty Editor), Ray Carrington III (Photo Instructor at Jack Yates High School) and Rebecca Briscoe (Houston Style Magazine). They discussed the behavior of Mr. Parks, his influence on film, and the future of African American cinema.
