FAN FEATURE FRIDAY - Debbie

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Yay! Fan Feature Friday is back and in full swing. Today I have for you Debbie of Thrifty Girl Vintage.  She is a recent blogger friend of mine that I met via Marina Hidalgo's Beauty Bloggers Group on Facebook. Debbie is just the nicest lady ever. Have fun learning more about her!

Name: Debbie Baker Burns
Age: 51
Occupation: Homemaker
Hometown Location: Manchester, Kentucky
Current Location: Kentucky
Blog URL (if Blogger): http://thriftygirlvintage.com

How did you come up with the name of your blog and how long have you been blogging? I've long believed that all inspiration comes from God and one evening when I was entertaining the idea to start a blog, the name, “Thrifty Girl Vintage” came to me seemingly out of nowhere. I liked it because it covered a lot of the things I'm interested in: thriftiness, girly things (which includes those occasional splurges!), and vintage which is a love affair of mine.

What are your goals for your blog? I want to encourage women to enjoy fashion without thinking they have to overspend or be a certain size. For myself, I want to develop my own style and experiment with new looks. I'm still evolving my blog, but honestly I would love to eventually write an ebook that would be available on my blog. I've always been a fan of Alexandra Stoddard and I can see myself writing positive lifestyle posts as well as daily outfit shots.
Do you have favorite fashion magazines? My favorite mainstream fashion magazine is Lucky. I get tons of ideas and I'm always ripping out pages that inspire me. I end up putting these tear sheets into sticky albums and I've got quite a collection. I've been doing this for years so some of my magazine pages are from the 70's! (oh wow, so cool! I need to start doing this with my magazine finds!)

Have you always been interested in fashion? If so, when did your love start? I've always loved fashion. I can still remember the hot pink and deep blue dress with the flower applique that I wore in grade school. I felt good in that dress! I bought my first fashion magazine, a Seventeen, when I was twelve. When I was thirteen, one of my friends and I sewed and decorated denim purses to sell. And of course, growing up, I spent a lot of Saturdays going to yard sales and thrift stores with my mom.
What stores would you recommend for other girls that want to try thrift shopping? I'm a big fan of Goodwill. They always have a large selection of clothes, purses, belts, scarves and shoes. The only thing I haven't had luck with at Goodwill is jewelry. I also like to check out local thrift stores. Each one is different, but you will soon learn who has the best purses or who carries more brand names. I've found that some of the only one dollar stores, such as Glitter, are a great place to stock up on jewelry and hair accessories. One bit of advice that I would give is that it's too easy to buy too much just because it's cheap. Just as in retail shopping, it's best to buy only the items that you really love. But, that said, because it is cheap, you can take a chance and try a new style or a strange looking piece.

What is your favorite decade of vintage fashion? I get excited when I find anything from the brand Esprit from the early 80's. It had a real cult following (including me) around that time. I also love dresses and structured bags from the 50's and 60's.
Do you like to incorporate current trends with your thrifted goodies? I heed the advice to mix your vintage finds with current trends so you will look modern and fresh and not as if you're in a period costume.

Do you wear thrifted shoes? I do. I freshen them up with lemon essential oil before I wear them. It cleans and disinfects naturally.

Who are some of your style icons? I like the easy beachy look of Lauren Conrad and Blake Lively. I love the eclectic, interesting way that Zooey Deschanel dresses.
What is the best thing you love about being a fashion blogger? One of the best things about blogging is the friendships you make in the blogging community. I've made friends from close to my own backyard to all around the world. On a personal note, I love how it stretches and changes you. I've developed so much more self-confidence since I began blogging, confidence in what I wear and who I am and what I am capable of accomplishing.

Who are some of your favorite fashion bloggers? I have so many! Meagan, Mongs, Sacramento, Patti, Tammy, Megan and Nora, Terri, Dawn, Sara, Shasie, Marina, Emily, Amy...you all know who you are! The theme I see among my favorites are that they are bloggers I've gotten to know through commenting back and forth on our respective blogs, Facebook pages, twitter and sometimes email. (Thanks so much Debbie! Yay!)

Tell us more about inspiration Monday? Inspiration Monday is a link-up sponsored by Megan and Nora at two birds (http://twobirdsboutique.blogspot.com/). Each week they provide us with a celebrity look to copy for our Monday post. You can either copy the look literally, which is fun, or do your own take on the look, which is also fun. I love having Megan and Nora dress me on Mondays!
Are there any other members in your family that are really into magazines? Just me, really. I noticed among my friends growing up that no one seemed to be buying and reading as many magazines as did and still do. I think I'm obsessed!

What are some style rules that you think can be broken? Probably most of them. It's just clothes, people! My favorite style rule to break is mixing prints.
Would you like to add anything else for my readers? First, thank YOU, Shasie, for including me on Fan Feature Friday. I am honored and happy to be included in the number. I would also like to say a big “thanks” to all my readers and to everyone who has checked out my blog. As I've said before, every writer writes in the hope of being read and hopefully touching someone else on a personal level.
