EVENT RECAP: White Linen Nights in the Heights 2011

Monday, August 08, 2011

Last year was my first time attending White Linen Nights in the Heights. I found out about it from my friend Veronica who is always in the know about cultural happenings in the City of Houston.  Apparently this event started in New Orleans, and Houston adopted it about 5 years ago after Hurricane Katrina. The event has grown in participants each year, but for some reason it's also held during the hottest month of the year--AUGUST!  While other areas of the world are discussing the start of "Fall Weather" we are still at 100+ everyday! Anyway, because of the heat some people opted to not attend the event because the majority of it is outside in the heat, and even at 7:30pm it's still Hot!! Here's a little summary of White Linen Nights:

"Originating in New Orleans, White Linen Night started as a way for local businesses to connect with the community and each other. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, several business owners and artists came to the Houston area and set up shops in the Heights...It's a neighborhood celebration of art, culture and "citified" bohemia".

Ensemble:
Dress: Express
Vest: DIY seen here
Thong Sandals: Target
Necklace: H&M
Earrings: Aldo Accessories
Headband: Aldo Accessories

Did I mention that it's "recommended" that one wears white to this event? I'm sure you picked that up by now! ha-ha
It's amazing how some angles and photos make you larger than you really are. I look humongous in this pic compared to the first two, yet it's still the same person...ME!

This was also my first event as a Fashion reporter for Fashionably Houston. If you follow me on twitter, my fanpage or even my personal page, you know that I came across my very own fashion community here in Houston. I knew that if I kept looking hard enough I would find the underground network that I knew HAD to exist. And by accident I stumbled upon Fashionably Houston by googling Houston Fashion Week.  I signed up right away, and saw a link to "Want to be a Reporter", applied, and I was accepted!! I was welcomed with warm greetings and came up with some ideas for reporting on White Linen Nights. My article topic was to find vendors that worked on hand-crafted items related to Fashion. I found a few, but I will not discuss them here! You will have to wait for my post on Fashionably Houston. In the meantime check out the website of Fashionably Connected, the parent group for Fashionably Houston. They may be in a city near you!

I captured the following people out and about at the event and had to take their pictures!! I wish I had more, but after I ran out of business cards, I felt illegitimate asking people for their photos!!
I was instantly drawn to his lovely young lady due to my latest Kate Middleton "style obsession".  She was one of the few that were sporting a hat. I felt like I was in Europe...so naturally I ran after her and her friend to take their pictures!

Turns out here and her friend were from France, and had amazing accents. They actually had just bought these hats at the festival!

Not everyone went in all white linen, and there were many stylish non-white looks!

Ran into my friends James and Veronica and their friend Daryl. The men looking Dapper in their white and V, very bohemian in her White Summer Dress.

I need to start featuring more men in my blog, and I really liked James' style with the "fedora". Nice touch James!

Last year when I attended the event I had my face painted by this wonderful lady that was working in one of the congresswoman's buildings for the event. She did this AMAZING flower for me last year...so I made it my mission to find her again this year. Yes I'm 27 years old and I still love to have my face painted!
Last Year's Face Painting
So I found her (at the same place) and she asked me what I wanted this year. I thought for a half a second and said...well I'm wearing peacock earrings so let's do a peacock! Lo and behold this girl is amazing talented. She whipped this bad boy out in minutes!

My peacocks!!!

I actually obtained her name this time around along with her business card and a few pictures. Her name is Maria Cortes and turns out she's a children's book author!! So we exchanged cards and I'm happy to keep building my network in Houston!!
Don't mind my sweaty face! This was at the end of 6 hrs in the heat...I think my makeup was all gone by this point!
I was in the office of a House of the Representatives! Cool! Maria and I, with one of her books!
OUTFIT DETAILS
The cute tie headband I bought that has enough left after tying for tassles down the back

White Linen Nights was working with Breast Cancer Research for the night with a whole street dedicated to Pink. I showed my support by wearing my Breast Cancer Pin.

Once last chat together before Mr. Peacock was washed away :-(
This is what my friends and I wore to the event last year!

Come back tomorrow to see photos & videos from the Fashion Show!!

Great job taking the pictures, too, that one French girl really does look like Kate Middleton... And you are obviously not the only one obsessed with her, EVERYBODY is, including me, of course. I still can't get over her wedding dress, let alone all the gorgeous outfits she has worn since...
