FEATURING MY FATHER

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's and Father Figures today!! I was blessed to be raised by two wonderful parents growing up. Of course growing up when I got into trouble twice, it wasn't as fun, and during my rebellious teenage years it wasn't that fun either...haha. But my Dad was always there for me, and when I look back, even though I thought my Dad was being "too overprotective", he really was just being a Dad. A parent, one that actually cares about what their child is doing, where they are headed, who they are hanging out with, and trying to steer us children in the right direction. And I'm glad that I had a Dad that cared that much about my sister and me to be protective of us, and not just let us do any old thing.

I've always been Daddy's Little Girl. Haha, I always go to my Dad for everything...still, and I'm 27!! I remember one time when I was 25 there was a gigantic spider in my apartment in Houston and I called my Dad in Pgh...seriously what was he going to do? But talking to my Dad I always feel better about any situation, there's just something about knowing your Dad's got your back right?  Well I love you Daddy (as I still call him) and here is part I of your Father's Day Present!!

Younger Years

How many siblings do you have, and where are you in the order? Seven brothers, and one sister, and I am the third oldest.

Did you share clothes with your siblings? Did you guys ever fight over clothes? Yes we shared clothes, and sometimes we did fight over them (I can imagine with 7 brothers! At least my Aunt didn't have to worry about that!)

Family picture of my Dad, with my Grandma and Grandpa and all of his siblings!

Were you and your brothers overprotective of how your ONE sister dressed? No, Mom made sure she was always appropriately dressed.

How did Grandma dress while you were growing up? Your grandma liked wearing dresses that had flower patterns. Whenever I see these type of dresses in a store, I get teary-eyed.

Here is a picture of my beloved late paternal Grandmother. It saddens me that I have lost both of my grandmothers, but my Grandma was tough raising all those boys!!

Are there any items of clothing from your previous years, that you would never wear again? I will never wear a loud, pink shirt; I think that is for the younger male generation, and no way will you see me in polyester.

Any items you wish would come back on trend for men? NO (I laugh at my Dad's one-word response)

College Years
My Dad was on the Wrestling Team in College! It's so fun to see my Dad when he was near my age!

Wasn't my Dad handsome? No wonder my Mom had to fight the other girls off with a bat!

What would you have worn out on a date back in the day? I remember wearing a LOUD, pink shirt with a wide white belt and gray bell bottom pants. I also wore high platform, powdered blue shoes.

How has your style changed from when you were younger to where you are now? Older person means more mature clothes

What looks on men today do you see that you don't like for yourself? I don't like wearing plaid patterned pants/suits or short-sleeve dress shirts

Dating Years
Who knew my Dad was part animal? Ha-ha, I had never seen these pictures before and could not believe they were of my DAD! He said he was posing for Mommy! My Dad's like Tarzan in the tree!

Looks like Tarzan found his Jane!! I didn't do anything fancy with this picture because I liked how my mom had drew a heart on the photo when it was first taken, and wanted to show that!
My mom  said she had to fight off women in college for my Dad. One girl even left the campus because she didn't want to "stand" in the way of my mom and Dad's relationship
What looks do you like to see on Mom? Your mom looks good in anything, especially pastels.

What is your opinion on woman who wear a bunch of excessive makeup? Most women should wear makeup to enhance their natural beauty; too much makeup takes away from the natural (I guess Mom got it just right then, huh?)

How should men dress for the workplace? I think that men need to look appropriate in a job setting; unfortunately there are situations where the dress codes are violated!

Early Marriage

How long did you have the Jheri Curl, and what inspired you to wear your hair like that over an afro? I had it too long. I was probably the last person on Earth to finally stop wearing one. It was an easy style to maintain.

What is your opinion on over-the-top, patterned ties? I don't like them. I like ties that have patterns that are low key

What are your favorite television shows to watch? Most of my favorite television shows are on the retro station: Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. I am a product of the 1960s.

What activities are you into? In addition to Karate, I do other exercises to stay healthy. I am also involved with a lot of church activities. One day I will get involved again with bowling.

When you get dressed for work in the morning, how do you put together an outfit? I usually match up everything around the color of my pants. I don't believe in wearing light colored socks with dark colored pants.

What is your work dress code? Our dress code is usually business casual, howerver, I like wearing a shirt and tie everyday as that is what I am comfortable with. I don't believe in wearing jeans to my particular place of employment.

What are some of your favorite clothes to wear? I like suits, and all of my dress pants with cuffs on the pant legs...no exception.

Are you more comfortable in dress clothes or chill clothes? Believe it or not, chill clothes. Dress clothes have their place, but when I come home, I enjoy chilling in comfortable clothing.

My Mom and Dad in 2011

If you could go back to any decade of dress that you experienced, which decade would it be? That is hard to say, I guess it would have to be the 1970s.

Do you have anything else you would like to add for my readers? Your Mom FAILED to mention that I had to compete with other guys to get her in college too!

My Dad is too funny! Hope you all enjoyed this post on my Daddy! Happy Father's Day!

Luv,

  1. Love this post!! I hear you on the unnecessary-emergency-daddy calls. A few months back, I had to change a light bulb in an overhead thingie in the shower ceiling, and I made my dad stay on the phone with me the whole time in case any spiders fell on my head when I opened the latch. Thankfully, our dads are probably so used to that kind of thing by now that they can just be calm and act like this is normal behavior from their adult daughters lol

(And I can't believe how much your mum looks like you in the Christmas tree picture!)

    Awesome entry! :)

  2. Dad's Comments:Shalanda, you did a wonderful job on this project. It was nice seeing those beautiful memories as well as some bittersweet ones. You know, life pass by us so fast that sometimes you can only see the changes that are captured in pictures. It was hard to believe I looked like that back in those days. Thank you daughter. God blessed us with you as our computer wiz to capture those moments. Mom's Comments: What a lovely job. This was very emotional for us both and especially your dad because he's so proud of you and as he said, it brought back a lot of memories for him.
Thank you for the wonderful gifts you gave to both of us. We will always cherish these memories you've captured so beautifully. What a remarkable and caring person you are. Love you.

haha this was such a great interview! Can't believe you interviewed your Dad! So cute!

omg that pic of him in a turtle neck? I saw this pic of my Dad during his younger days when he was still studying in London (yes, I'm following in his footsteps by coming to the UK) and he totally wore a similar turtle neck and bell bottoms! Hehehe it's interesting isn't it how no matter where you're from, fashion transcends all nationalities :D

I also like that your Dad actually has a lot to say about fashion and he can explain how he dresses up for work etc. I think I might interview me Dad. I don't think he'd say much, though. Probably something like, "Whatever tie and shirt your Mother puts out for me" HAHA

What a great tribute to your father! I bet he is so proud of you, too. You always have the collest retro photos on your blog. I like the "spider" story:-) Funny.

  113. This is such a sweet post..it brought a smile to my face. What a way to show your dad how much you love him. OMG I chuckled at the Q&A about his jherri curl. I can so relate. I wore one from middle school until 10th grade.

  118. great post! I really enjoyed reading the interview and looking at the pictures over the years. I wish I had access to pictures of my dad growing up. I interviewed him once for a character sketch for my english class and my teacher gave me a C because I failed to include enough dialogue. It was a character sketch! My dad doesn't talk much lol Your post just reminded me of this.

  139. Isn't it great looking at your parents before you were around. It's so cool, and you forget that at one point they were our age too going through the same stuff!! Thanks for checking it out!

  142. I know there are hardly any "traditional" families anymore, and I'm so happy that my parents are still together with the ever increasing number of divorces in this world lately. Thank you for reading this post, and I'm glad you enjoyed, and happy to know that family is important to you too!!

  144. Wow a C!! That sounds crazy, I think it was cool that you thought of even adding an interview to your drawing assignment. Yea I'm very happy that my parents were able to dig these pictures up for me! Somehow it helps me to know them even more by seeing pictures of them when they were my age!

  156. Teehee, to fend off the men chasing my Mom, and to get the boys that do wrong to my sister and I! lolol I'm so glad you enjoyed it girl! I think it's great that you are following in your Dad's footsteps. I'm sure that makes him very happy! It is great to see how trends cross racial and ethnic lines. Clothes don't see color, wish people were the same way!! Yea my Dad actually does a great job putting together looks for the office! I've always admired his sense of style!

  160. Thank you so much Dale!! We are very close! I wish I could see my parents more often. It's funny growing up all you want to do is get away and be on your own with no more parental rules, but now that I'm older, I seem to just want to move closer to home!!

    ReplyDelete

  163. It's funny because sometimes people say I look like my Dad and then other times they say I look like my mom. It's hard for me to see it because mostly I think I look like my maternal grandmother! haha Right, "emergency" calls from their of age daughters! I'm sure they still enjoy being needed :-)

    ReplyDelete
  164. Thanks girl! Glad you liked this one too! Haha, my Dad and his hair! so funny!

  165. To Dad: I'm so happy that you enjoyed Part I of your Father's Day present. These pictures are bittersweet, especially the ones around grandma. Teehee, all my friends and fans think you were really handsome, and still are! Mom may have to fight off some more ladies. I'm glad God gave me the patience to deal with computers to do stuff like this! Because sometimes technology is rough! Love you Daddy!!

To Mom: I'm glad you and Daddy love it, and now he'll be able to keep this forever too!! Going through these pictures was so much fun. I got to see Dad in a different light! Especially his "modeling" poses!! Thank you Mommy!! Love you!

  168. DAD fashion! I love it! Your family has all kinds of cool going on in these pictures. Great looking grandparents, awesome shots of dad (I love the basketball shot, and the what looks like a class photo with some banging 70's shirt). Aren't we lucky to have wonderful fathers? Amd yeah, I think about all the times my dad made me sooo mad, and I look back now and think "I wouldn't have let me do that, either..."
