FAN FEATURE FRIDAY - Ilana

Friday, June 17, 2011

Welcome back to another installment of Fan Feature Friday!! This week I am featuring Ilana of My Modern Vintage. She's creative, a shop owner, and aspiring journalist!! You will love learning more about Ilana!!

Name: Ilana
Age: 25
Occupation: Journalism Student & Administration Officer
Hometown: Brisbane
Current Location: Brisbane, Australia
Blog URL (if blogger): http://mymodernvintagefashion.blogspot.com

How did you come up with the name of your blog? And how long have you been blogging? I started a shop on eBay last year called My Modern Vintage which stocked vintage inspired clothing. I decided to start a blog with the same name as I believe that the name suits my fashion style. I love vintage but always try to create a more modern look. I started my blog in December but have only been working on it since March. I love having somewhere to vent my creativity.

What inspires you about vintage fashion? I love vintage because it is different and you can wear it and know that nobody is wearing the same thing. I also love that it is great for the environment and I always try to buy recycled clothing when I can.

How is the weather down under? You are currently headed into winter now, right? It is getting colder but it doesn't get too cold where I live. The lowest temperature so far was about 8 degrees Celsius (46.4 degrees Fahrenheit) which isn't too cold.

Do you have any fashion icons? There are a lot of bloggers I love, mainly Liebemarlene, Calivintage, Flashes of Style and The Clothes Horse. I always find ladies incredibly inspiring.

What do you use for inspiration when putting together your outfits? I use many things such as online clothing sites,Chictopia and fashion blogs. Once I find inspiration I try to create a similar outfit wearing items in my closet. It is so much fun trying to recreate outfits.

Do you incorporate trends with your vintage finds? Definitely, I recently purchased some bright, printed palazzo, vintage pants and yesterday bought a bright teal coloured vintage skirt which I plan to wear with neutrals, viola the brights/neutral trend!

What made you decide to be a vegetarian and when? My mum has a lot of allergies so I was basically brought up as a vegetarian. She always made amazing vegetarian food and eating meat usually makes me feel sick. I occasionally have chicken but I don't eat any other meat. I also love animals so this is another reason.

Why German as your language to learn as opposed to any other language? Ha-ha. I work at a university and deal with plenty of international students. I really think it would be great to be able to speak to them in their native tongue.  So far I haven't been too successful but there is always Japanese and Chinese to learn!

What is your favorite vintage piece that you own? I have way too many, but I have a few vintage dresses that I love!

Have you noticed improvement in your photo skills having your blog? Yes definitely. I love working with my new camera. It is a Canon 500d. I would like to buy some more lenses for it soon and will hopefully keep learning how to use it better as time goes on.

How is fashion in Australia different than other place/s you have lived or visited? I have never traveled as I am terrified of planes (Girl I hate flying too! I have to take pills to get on planes or I'd have a panic attack!) I have heard that fashion in Brisbane is totally different to fashion in other parts of Australia such as Melbourne or Sydney. They are much more ahead of the times than Brisbane is.

Have any life experiences helped to shape your style? Not really. I usually dress how I feel (weather permitting). I am creative at heart so this is just another extension of my creative self.

What stores are popular in Australia for Thrift & Vintage shopping? There are plenty of stores in Melbourne which are great for vintage items. I recently went to Paddington in Brisbane (documented on my blog) which is Brisbane's main retro fashion district. I prefer to op-shop though, as it is so exciting finding a great bargain. It is also good because the money you spend goes towards a good cause. (So I had to ask Ilana to expand on the term op-store, never having heard the term before). Op-shopping is the same as thrift shopping except you shop at an "Opportunity" store, run by charities. (Cool! I'll have to see if there are any of these in the Houston area)

What inspired your love of journalism? I have been writing since I was about 6 years old. I have always wanted to publish a book and have written a young adult novel entitled Where the Land Meets the Sea. I wrote this when I was 15 so it would need some serious work before I would consider publishing it.

Do you do a lot of DIY crafts? Yes. I am teaching myself to sew which is fun (I am pretty hopeless). I have also recently started making jewelry and hair accessories which I sell in my Etsy shop. I have also recently opened my own online store with my mum called Rebellious Innocence which will sell vintage, handmade and new.

I hope you enjoyed reading about Ilana and will go and check out her blog and her stores!! If you are interested in being featured for Fan Feature Friday send me an email at shasielove@gmail.com.
