FEATURING MY MOTHER

Saturday, May 07, 2011

So for Mother's Day this year I decided to feature my mommy in her own blog post for this special day. Yes I'm 27 and I still call my mom, mommy. Remember I also sleep with stuffed animals too! I remember growing up and going through her jewelry box and wanting to wear all of her earrings. My mom loves pins and brooches, so I would pick out ones to wear to school on holidays. She has all kinds for almost every holiday. My mom has been a fashion inspiration to me ever since I was little. She has also been the woman I admire, and has raised me to not take crap from anyone, and always believe in myself. I love her so much, and I'm so glad to present her with this Mother's Day Gift Feature on Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day Mommy!! I'm so excited to share your style with the world, and your answers to my questions on your own personal style.

High School Years

Do you have any style icons? When I first thought of style icons, I was originally thinking of someone famous but then I thought of my dear precious mother. Mom would be my style icon because when she dressed for an occasion, she dressed to the nines from head to toe. She taught me how to pull a look together from clothing to accessories. Mom wasn't afraid to try new looks and blend different colors together. She would accent the outfit with sparkling shoes and purses. The only piece I didn't include was hats. I've never really liked hats on me but mom could wear hats, especially the large church ones.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
I like to shop at Macy's and JcPenny's

Is your rule for accessories the more the better, or just enough to look polished?
My rule for accessories would be just enough to look polished

Dating Years
What is your favorite item in your closet right now?
My favorite item right now is my black suit because it tapers my body nicely

Married!! Wasn't my mom a beautiful bride!?!?

Career Days. My Mom was a stylish work woman and still is!

She was a teacher before switching fields to Social Work

How has your style evolved over the years?
I've gone from polyester and big plaid to soft colors. I've always been told that I look good in pastel colors so I wear them more. Since losing weight over the past year, I look for clothes that fit my body rather than trying to hide my flaws with larger sizes as in the past. Thanks to Stacy and Clinton of TLC's "What Not to Wear", I've learned to accept my body at whatever size and with flaws. I unfortunately gained back a little weight due to personal tragedies this year but still embrace my body and try to dress it to the best of my ability.

My grandmother sewed this whole outfit for my mom below including the hat, and a handbag with it. She was a great seamtress!!
Do you like the current styles now or not so much compared to what you grew up with?I'll be honest. I don't like the current styles too much right now. Too much stripes, design. I like simple cut patterns and not too much embellishment

What fashion advice do you have for all the mother's out there?
Fashion Advice for Mothers---accept your body no matter what shape it is. Our bodies are so special because we've been blessed to carry our precious babies in these bodies. Treat your body as the treasure it is--no matter what size it is. Wear clothes that compliment your figure and what I've learned from my daughter Shalanda is--look for clothes that fit well and don't get stuck on what the size is on the tag.

Christmas when my sister, Stacy and I, were kids. She's older. I absolutely love this look on my momPlaying in the yard with mom!

My mom, sister and I, at my sister's college graduation
Do you have any favorite fashion tips that you've learned over the years? The fashion tip I just mentioned from you, my daughter. I've also learned that A-line style clothes are best for my body and to look for styles that de-emphasize my stomach area. There are so many fashions that can make your body look hourglass. You just have to shop around and try on many different styles until you find the one for your body.

My Mom and I in Houston, when her and my Dad came to visit

Do you have anything else you would like to add for my readers?
I just want to add that I was a little shy when first asked to be featured on my daughter's blog but as I've looked for pics of myself and answered these questions, I feel more confident and proud of the achievements I've made with my body and the things I've learned about fashion to help me look my best. I feel honored to be featured and hope I am an inspiration to all those women out there that have an average body just like mine. Love yourself and love those bodies. God made each of us as He wants us to be. Don't try to be anyone but yourself and reflect that in the clothes you wear!!

  1. What can I say!! It looks absolutely wonderful, my dear. That picture of my precious mother and your grandmother made me so proud. She was a beautiful woman and person and loved to dress up. Thank you so much for including her and the kind words you shared at the beginning. You have also been an inspiration to me in the way you carry yourself and the achievements you've made for yourself. This is the best Mother's Day gift I could have ever gotten. Love you, dear.

  28. First of all,I am thankful to have such a lovely wife and beautiful daughters in my life. Secondly,we are thinking very much about our mothers as they both look down on us from Heaven. They were truly good mothers.
Thirdly, you couldn't pay me to wear those sad polyester pants again. No way. I still have a good head of hair and can grow an Afro if I want to.
